My Tips for Staying Organized

This is a huge passion of mine! Ever since I was in middle school I remember being so picky about my room and keeping everything organized. As I got older it got worse. I write, ‘worse’ because it got to a point where I needed everything exactly where it was. If someone moved something I would definitely let that person know. I would clean and organize my room about two to three times a day. In the morning I would make sure to make my bed and tidy up, then when I got home from school I would clean up the rest of my room, and again before bed. I even cleaned and organized my friend’s room, multiple times, for free!!

Summer is now here and even though this is something you typically read during spring (spring cleaning) I thought I would write about it now. Since summer just started we start to rummage through our bikini and summer clothes bins. The large towels and beach supplies come out. This extra ‘clutter’ always has me biting my nails. So, I thought it would be perfect to share some tips to keep all our homes feeling clean, cool and fresh for the summer season.

Tip #1 

Store away all seasonal items. Since it is summer now, if you haven’t done so store away all your winter and fall clothes. This makes more room in your closet and drawers. In doing so, this helps you clear away anything you don’t want or no longer wear. Which leads to tip number two. 

Tip #2

Get rid of things you no longer use or need.

When deciding whether you should save an item or donate it ask yourself, “will I buy this item now in the condition it is in?” If your answer is no, then toss it or if it is still in an okay condition then donate it. There is no point in keeping things we won’t use or wear. 

Tip #3

Every 3-6 months I do a sweep. This is very natural to me, it might seem excessive to you, but I naturally get the urge. It’s like clock work for me. Once that 3 month period comes around I already start itching to clear away some clutter and make more space. If 3 months is too often for you, then do it every 4 or 6 months. Doing this helps us get through our phases faster. I used to constantly buy things that were trending and it cost me money and lots of space. If you go through your things every few months then you can really question whether you still want certain pieces around. My thinking is if I haven’t used something in 3 months, what makes me think that I will use it in the next 2. 

Tip #4

Buy less stuff! This one is a tough one. If you are anything like me, we looooove to spend! The thing about buying is that we are creatures of habit. We are naturally drawn to the things we like. You ever notice why we seem to head towards that certain clothing section or aisles. That is because we know our preferences are there. We then tend to buy many similar items over time. If  you where to look in my closet I have many, many, many black items. So, a way to combat this is to pause and really think about buying more. If you already have something similar to it, then there really isn’t a need for it. Plus, this helps us keep more of our money. Maybe use it for a nice vacation or a fun weekend. 

Tip #5

Put things back from where you got it. It will keep you home clean and clutter free. At first this might seem as a hassle but before you know it, it will be a great habit to have. This will also show others in your family to put these back as soon as they are done with it. 

This helps save you time. You won’t spend so much time cleaning up a messy home. As a side note, buy cute bins or containers that fit your home’s style. They can be a cute addition to your home and also keep your place clutter free.

Tip #6

Make your bed every morning. The bed is the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom and keeping it neat and tidy automatically changes the appearance of the room. It only take less than 5 minutes to make. 

Tip #7

Everyday, devote 10-15 minutes to organize your home. This will help keep your home looking clean and clutter free longer. Plus when we get caught up in a busy and long day, it is nice to have things put away and organized, you are free to make a new mess and don’t have to worry about things getting in the way. The good thing about this is that you can do it at any time. In the morning before work, in the evening before bed or even during a lunch break. 

Tip #8

Take advantage of height! Use those walls in your home. It is such a big help to have shelves up or even tall bookshelves. This helps keep things off the ground and adds a certain style to your home. You are able to add whatever you like on them and personalize your home. Plus, this really helps keep things decluttered and accident free if you have kids and pets. They also just look really pretty. 

Some of you might be thinking, why does it matter, it can’t really be that important to clean and organize. It just seems like too much. I know this comes easily to some than others, but it is so important to do this. For me, organizing and decluttering is such a huge stress reliever. I feel like I can breath and truly relax. I’m one of those people who can’t just sit and do nothing for longer than 10 minutes, so cleaning up helps me reduce any anxiety. Plus, this helps me feel accomplished and ready to tackle more. 

Organizing really helps to clear your mind and make room for more important things. I mean both mentally and in your home. When you are clear minded you are able to focus more on the things you love and on the things that need to get done. When I really get in the zone, I realize that my creativity spikes and my thinking juices really get going. As a plus your home looks fresh and inviting. 

Ultimately, having a clean, fresh and organized home gives you more time and flexibility. You will find you have more time for other things rather than just constantly picking up or looking for certain things. Once everything has its original place, you won’t have to waste time looking for stuff– you will know right where to go. 

At the end of the day, you feel relaxed and at ease. You end up loving your home and the space you are in. This is great for your entire well being. 

Whenever you feel stressed or anxious try cleaning up and organizing some things around the house, you will be surprised at how well it helps.
